Listen.

In a bright yellow house, nearby a window sill bathed in sunshine, lived a beautiful flower named Lily. She unfurled her large, velvety petals, each one a delicate shade of rose quartz kissed by the setting sun. Sam, the man who lived in the house, loved Lily dearly. He watered her every day, gave her plant food, and even talked to her, hoping she would grow more and flourish.

Lily loved the attention, but she was wilting. Sam was giving her too much water and too much sun. Every time she tried to tell him, he would just smile and say, “Don’t worry, little Lily, I know what you need.”

One morning, Lily’s leaves started to droop, and her petals lost their vibrant color. “Sam,” she whispered, “I think I need less water today. My roots feel soggy.”

Sam, however, was busy reading a gardening book. “Nonsense, Lily,” he said without looking up. “It’s a sunny day, and flowers need lots of water to grow.” He filled her pot to the brim, ignoring her silent pleas.

Days turned into weeks, and Lily grew weaker and weaker. Her petals started to fall, one by one, leaving her stem bare and fragile.

“Oh dear,” Sam said one day, noticing Lily’s condition. “I think you’re not getting enough sunlight. I’ll move you to a brighter spot.” He placed her under a scorching lamp, hoping it would revive her.

Lily tried to tell him that she needed a cooler spot with gentle sunlight, but her voice was too weak. Sam, convinced that he knew best, continued to overwater and overexpose her to the harsh light.

Finally, one morning, Lily’s last petal fell. Her stem drooped, and she closed her eyes, too weak to speak.

Sam was heartbroken. “What happened, Lily?” he asked. “I did everything I could for you.”

But Lily didn’t answer. She had tried to tell him what she needed, but he hadn’t listened. He had assumed that his way was the only way, and in doing so, he had lost his beloved flower.

Sam sat down beside Lily’s empty pot, a tear rolling down his cheek. He realized that sometimes, the best way to care for someone is to listen to their needs, even if they differ from what you think is best.

He vowed to learn more about flowers and to always listen to their silent whispers. For he knew that true love meant understanding and respecting what each individual needs to thrive.
